STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — An independent investigator is reviewing the Stonington police department’s handling of the alleged assault of a Black hotel worker by a white couple last month.

The incident occurred at the Quality Inn in Mystic on June 26. The Day reports surveillance video shows the man attacking 59-year-old Crystal Caldwell in a hallway. Caldwell allegedly suffered a concussion and eye, face, rib and back injuries.

The suspects, who are from New York, have been charged by the New London State's Attorney's Office with assault and bias intimidation and are at large. Both sought treatment at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London but were released and returned to the hotel to get their belongings and left.

The newspaper reported police have said they were told by hospital staff not to come inside the hospital due to COVID-19 precautions. A hospital spokeswoman told the newspaper its policy requires officers to be screened for the virus, but didn't comment on specific interactions with police on the day the suspects were admitted.

First Selectwoman Danielle Chesebrough wrote on the town's Facebook page that the town has retained an independent firm to conduct a review. The Board of Police Commissioners has scheduled a special virtual meeting for Monday to hear a status report on the incident, The Day reported.
