Jon Cotton, the former owner and COO of Meridian Health of Detroit, is now in the hotel business.

Cotton bought the Hotel Iroquois, a family-owned operation on Mackinac Island, on Friday for an undisclosed price from the McIntire family, who have owned and operated the boutique hotel since 1954.

"Although this is a bittersweet moment for me, I am pleased that another Michigan family will be working with all our great staff and carrying on the traditions of hospitality and excellence for which the Iroquois is known," Margaret McIntire said in a statement on the hotel's Facebook page.

"It was really important to our family that it go to another family," Sam Barnwell, Hotel Iroquois' director of operations and Margaret McIntire's grandson, told Detroit Free Press. "And it's even better that it's going to a family that has stayed with us for years."

Hotel Iroquois will now be managed by Troy-based Hotel Investment Services Inc., which also manages Mackinac Island's Harbour View Inn and The Inn at Stonecliffe. Barnwell will remain in his post as operations director of the 45-room hotel.

"Rest assured Sam and the long-time management team and employees will continue the Hotel Iroquois' high standards and traditions you have come to enjoy and expect throughout the years," the Facebook statement said.

Cotton, a longtime visitor to the hotel, said its traditions will continue under his ownership.

"I am committed to honoring the stewardship and legacy that Sam and Margaret McIntire gave to this hotel for the last 66 years," Cotton said in the Free Press report.

The Cotton family sold Meridian, Michigan's largest Medicaid health plan founded in 1997 by David and Shery Cotton, to Tampa, Fla.-based WellCare Health Plans Inc. in 2018 for $2.5 billion.

Hotel Iroquois is not the only family-operated hotel on Mackinac Island to get new ownership recently. The Grand Hotel, the 134-year-old iconic venue that had been stewarded by the Musser family since 1933, was purchased last year by KSL Capital Partners LLC, a private equity firm based in Denver.
