Novato voters gave overwhelming approval to the city’s proposed tax hike for hotel, motel and short-term rental guests, according to Tuesday election results.
About 78% of city voters approved Measure Q, which increases the city’s transient occupancy tax rate charged to hotel, motel and short-term rental guests from 10% to 12%. The measure required a simple majority approval to pass.
The Novato City Council placed the measure on the ballot as one method to address a revenue shortfall and rising city expenses. City staff estimate the tax could bring in $400,000 in new revenue each year.
“We appreciate the community’s interest in Measure Q and thank all the residents who participated in this historic election,” said Mayor Denise Athas. “The success of Measure Q allows the city to continue to address community priorities and city service needs.”
The city faces a $2.5 million deficit this fiscal year as a result of a local economy shaken by the coronavirus pandemic and preexisting revenue shortfalls.
No organized campaign was formed to oppose the tax increase, though the Marin County Republican Party opposed the measure.
