The historic Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine, may undergo a major redevelopment if the local planning board approves of their plans.
Market Square Architects in Portsmouth, NH, has been chosen to design the work. Walsh Engineering Associates in Westbrook, Maine, submitted an updated working site plan to the planning board in April.
In the first phase, work will be focused on the North Campus and will include the demolition of eight buildings, construction of five new buildings, a building expansion, as well as new parking lots and new utilities, according to an application submitted by Silas Canavan of Walsh Engineering Associates on behalf of the owner.
Boughton Hotel Corporation owns the Colony Hotel. The Boughton family has owned and operated the property since 1947.
According to their website, the Colony Hotel is a recognizable landmark overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Kennebunk River and a private beach.
"The 1914 resort is a picturesque getaway with 125 guest rooms in five buildings each with its own distinctive style and ocean, river, or garden view. Ocean view dining available onsite for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving fresh New England fare. The Colony has been the proud host to many of Kennebunkport’s most famous visitors as well as guests who want to experience classic New England charm in a beautiful historic setting," is written on the website.
The Colony Hotel is also Maine's first green hotel, according to their website.
Kennebunkport Planning Board Administrative Assistant Lisa Harmon said on Monday morning that all of the documents involving the expansion can be found by visiting their website.
Harmon said it is her understanding that the Colony Hotel project is on hold momentarily while revised plans are put together for presentation to the planning board.
"I haven't seen anything else come in that's now going forward," Harmon said.
When new information comes in, Harmon said there will be a public notification put out so residents can have an opportunity to express their opinions.
