New hotel adds chill vibe to Newport, R.I., escape - Boston Herald

Newport, R.I., is renowned for its elegance, charm, beauty and history.

Now there’s a new hotel for visitors eager to take it all in.

Newport, as much as it is a place full of the fancy and fabulous, can also be a perfect spot for a kicked back, sea soaked and super fun escape.

The new Wayfinder Hotel (thewayfinderhotel.com), situated just a short mile away from the center of the action at 151 Admiral Kalbfus Road, brings a relaxing vibe to a city stay.

From big rooms that let in lots of sun to the bright pops of artwork throughout, the nods to the sea, a fabulous restaurant and bar and, of course, a great pool area, the Wayfinder makes for a great escape.

My husband and I used it as our home base for a recent weekend.

We arrived at the Wayfinder on a Friday morning. The base building looks simple from the outside, but the retro sign on the roof hints at the ambiance within.

The lobby features a big sitting area circling a retro-cool fireplace and little nooks and crannies in which to settle and people-watch over a cup of coffee.

The hotel is a two-minute drive to the center of town (they hope to add a shuttle service soon; they have bikes on site if you prefer).

And in a way, I liked being a little bit removed from the hubbub proper. We easily zipped back and forth.

The pool area is a destination of its own.

There are plenty of lounge chairs, couch areas with shade, tables for noshing and a bar with poolside drink and food service. A high fence and just the right topography and decor creates an oasis. We loved it.

Then it was on to sampling Newport.

We found breakfast magic at the Corner Café (110 Broadway, cornercafenewport.com), a family-run business with a buzz earned from remarkable food, great service and a lovely and simple setting. I’d rank it as a must for a visit.

They don’t take reservations and if there’s a line, don’t let it scare you. It moves fast.

We then chose to do some walking, meandering in and out of cool shops, checking out boats in the harbor and, of course, sipping a Del’s Lemonade made fresh for us right there in town.

That night, we chose to dine in-house at the Wayfinder, savoring the amazing local food — and drinks — their culinary team creates.

Cool extra? Their cocktails on tap. I loved them, but the prize for me went to the wonderful “Lit Juice,” a tequila-based cocktail with a kick of spice.

The next day was all about the pool.

At the Newport Vineyards (909 E. Main Road, Middletown; newportvineyards.com) we sipped wine after meandering through the vineyard and savored a brilliant charcuterie board. The place was packed with people celebrating various events. We toasted our newfound freedom to be out and about.

The Cliff Walk is always a must for me, and this time we gazed out over Easton’s Beach (or “First Beach” as locals call it). Next time, I’ll pack a beach chair and relax there for a few hours.

The crashing waves, sand dunes and views are amazing.

Back at the pool, we ordered cocktails and snacks and took dips to cool off.

We discovered, too, the Wayfinder occasionally offers special events, like the cocktail making session “Cocktails with Coco” that I popped in on and during which I learned how to make a proper daiquiri.

Extra cool: the roaming popsicle cart you can enjoy most times of the day.

That night we headed back to town for some dinner at Diego’s (11 Bowen’s Wharf; diegosnewport.com).

It’s in the thick of things — and once in at our table, the buzz of busy Newport was like soothing background noise while we enjoyed great Mexican cuisine along with tequila suggestions from our server.

After dinner we went off to find some Irish music and succeeded, but found ourselves drawn back to the Wayfinder for nightcaps.

There in the bar, guests and staff alike were chatting.

We had to leave the following morning, but on our way home, we decided to add Newport as a regular escape from now on.

After all, there’s a ferry to the islands just off Newport.
