Peninsula residents received a sneak peek at the Portuguese-themed Monsaraz boutique hotel during small-group tours in the days preceding its May 28 official opening.
Leading one tour of the Monsaraz San Diego at 1451 Rosecrans St., part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, was Greg LaMarca, president of the hotel project’s developer, Alliance Development Services Inc.
Guests’ attention is immediately captured by modernistic lighting fixtures suspended from the high ceiling and stylistic furniture upon entering the spacious ground-floor lobby. The hotel lobby leads through a hallway into the restaurant bar, Westerly Public House, in the rear.
“The idea is for you to be engaged with the bar as you walk in and see what’s going on,” said LaMarca, posing next to custom-made impressionistic artwork lining the lobby walls.
Westerly Public House’s menu will feature coastal cuisine fusing Australian flavors with Californian style. “It’s got a whole vibe to it,” said LaMarca of the new restaurant’s ambiance, which includes stylistic flourishes, like archway-shaped booths.
LaMarca introduces executive chef Jesse Paul, who had been spending his time leading up to the hotel’s opening sweating the details of space management in the 60-seat, 2,800-square-foot onsite eatery. Paul’s previous culinary experience includes owning The Wooden Spoon in Escondido and working as chef de cuisine at Carlsbad’s Vivace Restaurant in the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.
To one side of the restaurant bar is a comfortable lounge space in a room bookended with fireplaces. Of the hotel’s comfy indoor ground-floor area, LaMarca noted Monsaraz gave Peninsulans what they wanted.
“They said they’d love to have meeting space,” he said. “This (room) will eventually close off (from the bar) and the whole area can be used for meeting space.”
The restaurant space on the opposite side of that community meeting room opens out into a dazzlingly green outdoor garden courtyard.
In the hotel’s expansive outdoor courtyard constructed on springy soft playground-like material, LaMarca points to a solid wall of faux plants. “We created some intimacy here,” he said pointing to groups of tables and chairs. He added, “You can have privacy in a bunch of different areas.”
La Marca stressed the garden courtyard has a good mix of colors. “We needed to soften a lot of the sharpness here by bringing color, warmth, and softness to the whole thing,” he said.
Named for one of Southern Portugal’s oldest settlements, a little fishing village occupied since pre-history, Monsaraz replaced The Dolphin Motel. A 49,150-square-foot, 92-unit, three-story hotel, Monsaraz is constructed over a basement parking garage with 92 spaces.
Monsaraz has “a lot of moving parts,” noted LaMarca adding, “What’s amazing about this hotel is the technology that’s inside, how ‘smart’ the rooms are, how they ‘speak’ to the front desk.”
Upstairs in a hotel guest room, LaMarca shows off the trendy room designs featuring oversize 55-inch TVs, refrigerators in drawers, and bathrooms with state-of-the-art shower fixtures, glass walls, and shower blinds.
Outside is a shared balcony space named The Hideaway, an outdoor terrace that can be used by guests. “You could have small parties or showers here,” said LaMarca. “A wedding party, for instance, could rent a block of rooms and come out here at night and have drinks at the bar and view boats in the harbor. We wanted to make it special.”
Monsaraz will have a grand opening likely in July. LaMarca hinted there will be lots for guests to look forward to.
‘We’re planning to have a lot of different events, like Margarita Mondays, local happy hours, etc.,” he said.
