A 17-year-old survived a gunshot wound Friday night in a New Brunswick hotel, although questions remain about what led up to the shooting, officials said.
Officers arrived at The Heldrich Hotel & Conference Center at 10 Livingston Avenue around 9 p.m., according to a statement sent by New Brunswick Police Deputy Director J.T. Miller.
Cops found a young man alone in a rented room with a “non-life threatening wound” in his “groin and leg area,” Miller wrote.
The teenager told officers that others had been present for the shooting, but the 17-year-old gave “conflicting stories” about what happened, according to police. He was treated less than a mile away at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Officers believe the young man was shot inside the rented room and other areas of the building were not affected, Miller said.
The hotel’s director of operations confirmed the approximate time and said officers described the incident as a “shooting by a guest.”
“Our team responded quickly, cooperating with the New Brunswick police department in every regard,” Robyn Nixon said in a statement read over the phone, and “our guests have been incredibly understanding and supportive.”
No other injuries were reported. Additional details, including the young man’s name, were not immediately available.
Police asked anyone with more information to call Detective Elfi Martinez at 732-745-5217.
A spokesman said the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office was not part of the initial response to the shooting.
