MARSHALL — The image of the Kiel and Morgan Hotel, the first building used as the Lyon County courthouse, has been used to help commemorate the county’s 150th anniversary over the past year. But the actual historic building also needs some work, Lynd city officials said.
On Tuesday, members of the Lyon County Board voted to contribute up to $7,500 to help with window repairs, electrical work and other renovations at the hotel site in Lynd. The money will come from excess funds left in the county’s budget for the 150th celebrations.
“We have a great opportunity here,” Commissioner Paul Graupmann told county board members.
In the 1870s, the Kiel and Morgan Hotel building served as the first Lyon County courthouse and the first regular meeting place for county government. The building was donated to the city of Lynd in the 1990s, and in recent years the community has done some work to preserve and upgrade it, he said.
“It really kind of operates as a museum for Lyon County,” Graupmann said.
But there was still work that needed to be done, he said.
“They’re looking to finish up the building,” he said.
Lynd Mayor Justin Guggisberg said the city is putting in additional electrical wiring in the building, and also plans to replace broken windows, and add Sheetrock on the hotel’s second story. The cost to complete the project is $5,970.
Commissioners supported the idea of helping pay for the building updates.
“I think this is another prime example of a historical site we need to try and preserve,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson.
Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg estimated the county had budgeted about $50,000 for its 150th anniversary celebrations, and spent about half of that amount.
“It’s certainly within the budget for this project,” Stomberg said.
Anderson moved that the county use up to $7,500 of the excess funds left for the 150th celebrations for renovations at the Kiel and Morgan Hotel. The additional money in that amount would help cover additional maintenance work at the site like tree trimming, he said.
The motion passed.
“The city of Lynd appreciates it,” Guggisberg said.
