Review: Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card | The Ascent - Motley Fool

125,000 bonus points: You'll earn this sizable welcome offer after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months. Hilton Honors points are worth about $0.005 per point on average, although it's possible to redeem them for more. Based on that value, 125,000 bonus points are worth at least $625, making this one of the bigger sign-up bonuses on the market.

Earn up to 12 points per $1: The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card earns:

  • 12 points per $1 on purchases at Hilton hotels and resorts
  • 6 points per $1 at U.S. restaurants
  • 6 points per $1 U.S. supermarkets
  • 6 points per $1 U.S. gas stations
  • 3 points on all other purchases

As we mentioned, Hilton Honors points aren't the most valuable credit card rewards. But even after taking that into account, this card can still earn you a lot of points very quickly. And its bonus categories are a match for the best rewards credit cards.

Earn a free weekend night reward: If you use your Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card for $15,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year, you'll receive one free weekend night reward. This gets you a free night of standard accommodation at any Hilton property that has this type of room available. You can easily redeem this for a value of $100 to $200, and at higher-end properties, it could be worth over $500.

This reward is typically only valid on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. But right now, all unexpired and new weekend night rewards issued through Dec. 31, 2020 can be used any night of the week. The offer was updated to make it easier to use during the coronavirus pandemic.

Complimentary Gold status: As a cardholder, you'll automatically get complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status. Benefits include free breakfast, space-available room upgrades, and an 80% bonus on base points earned on every stay.

There's also the opportunity to get Hilton Honors Diamond status by making at least $40,000 in eligible purchases with your card in a calendar year. That's the highest elite status in the Hilton Honors program, and benefits include executive lounge access and a room guarantee if you book at least 48 hours in advance (some restrictions apply).

Airport lounge access: The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card includes a complimentary Priority Pass membership with up to 10 free lounge visits per membership year. This type of Priority Pass membership is worth $299. Priority Pass lounges are widespread, as there are currently over 1,300 worldwide.

If you fly often, airport lounge access is an excellent benefit, especially from a credit card that only costs $95 per year. Most credit cards offering a complimentary Priority Pass membership cost $400 or more.

Travel and consumer protections: There are a few useful protections offered by the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card:

  • Baggage insurance
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection

No foreign transaction fees: When you're out of the country, you can use your credit card without worrying about paying extra fees.
