An employee of a Riverside hotel was hospitalized Thursday, Sept. 10, after reporting that he was exposed to a powdery substance in one of the rooms, but firefighters who donned hazardous-materials suits couldn’t find what was described as a baggie with black-and-white material.

The man, upon further questioning, then changed his account of the incident, Riverside Battalion Chief Tony Perna said, without elaborating.

Two fire engines, two hazmat trucks, a paramedic truck, a battalion chief, ambulance and Riverside County Environmental Health went to the Hampton Inn on Riverwalk Parkway at about 4 p.m. The man told authorities that he entered a room on the second floor and found the baggie under a dresser. He became dizzy when he opened the baggie, and then he went downstairs and collapsed, Perna said.

Six firefighters methodically put on bright yellow protective suits, pink or green boots and oxygen tanks. They taped shut the ends of the suits on their wrists and then went through a briefing about their task. Two of the six entered the room, two stayed back in case they needed rescue and two were set to operate the decontamination pool.

But there was nothing to be found, Perna said.

Authorities reviewed surveillance video that Perna said showed the victim and another employee enter a different room about 40 minutes before the man became ill. Firefighters didn’t find anything dangerous there, either.

The victim, who Perna said had a legitimate medical emergency, then gave conflicting statements. The other employee he was with could not be located for questioning.

Riverside police were investigating, Perna said.

The hotel remained open during the incident.
