Disturbance, theft, simple assault: Orange Place
Police responded to the Hampton Inn around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 25 after a Cleveland woman, 22, initially reported someone was crawling out of her second-floor window. She later explained that she had met a Cleveland man, 28, in the parking lot and invited him up to her room, but when he became too intoxicated, she asked him to leave.
An argument ensued, and when the man punched her in the face, she struck him with a lamp before he fled with $200 that belonged to her. The desk clerk said he refused when the frantic suspect came to the lobby and asked to be let back in the room in order to retrieve the iPhone he had left behind, at which point he went out through the main entrance.
Police and hotel staff later found the room’s broken door knob on the hallway floor where he had tried to let himself back in. Police used the iPhone to identify the suspect and the woman positively identified him in a photo lineup in order to press charges and file for a protection order.
Miscellaneous: Brainard Road
Police met with Jewish Federation of Cleveland security at Temple Emanu El on Sept. 22 to listen to a five-minute rambling and nonsensical voice message from a New York City area code (excluding Manhattan) and referencing events that happened hundreds of years ago as well as modern organized crime.
Police heard no threats directed toward the temple or the Jewish faith, although upon further review, Federation security officials said they may have had similar dealings with a woman at another area temple.
Theft by deception: Chagrin Boulevard
An officer responded to Choolaah restaurant on the afternoon of Sept. 26 and met with a Garfield Heights man, 22, who earlier thought he was getting the night off, having sent $65 through CashApp to someone who was only posing as a co-worker interested in working his shift.
He noted that while the phone number did not match his co-worker’s, the name did, and by the time he learned from his manager that the co-worker had not agreed to cover his shift, the imposter on CashApp had already blocked him from further contact.
Police could not find the suspect’s number, although it showed characteristics of a land line and was likely spoofed.
Disturbance, unwanted guest: Orange Place
A Hampton Inn employee, 21, reported late on Sept. 26 that her ex-boyfriend, 22, from Cleveland, had called her using a friend’s phone and saying that she would regret blocking his number, adding that there were a bunch of people ready to tee off on her.
Shortly after she hung up on him, the ex arrived at the hotel to talk to her and the front desk clerk asked him to leave. When a friend of the suspect’s came in, the clerk called police, who contacted the ex and told him that if he returned, the woman would file menacing charges, and the hotel would charge him with trespassing.
Simple assault, assist fire department and ambulance: Orange Place
Police were called to the Drury Inn and Suites shortly before 10 p.m. on Sept. 26, where they found a Cleveland woman, 50, on the ground and in pain after being punched and kicked by two women believed to have followed her off of an elevator.
Hotel staff called police as they were witnessing the assault, when the suspects went up to her outside and assumed fighting stances, then attacked her after she tripped while retreating. Using security camera footage and a photo lineup, they identified a Garfield Heights woman, 30, and a Cleveland woman, 57, as the suspected assailants.
The victim was taken to Ahuja Hospital for her injuries and the investigation continues.
Personal welfare, drunk driving: Wild Cherry Oval/Trail
After a caller reported knocking on the car window of an unresponsive driver passed out at another neighborhood intersection around noon on Sept. 24, police found the driver, 22, had moved the car so that it was now positioned diagonally on Wild Cherry.
When she saw police, she started driving at speeds of 3-6 mph and told officers after she was stopped that she was on her way home to Akron from Cleveland. She refused a Breathalyzer after police seized a 24-ounce can of Icehouse beer that was in the car and charged her on suspicion of drunk driving.
