With more than 6,000 properties in 118 countries, Hilton is one of the largest hotel chains in the world, making Hilton Honors, the chain’s loyalty program, one of the most versatile options for scoring free hotel nights.Hilton includes 18 different brands — from budget options like DoubleTree and Hampton to renowned luxury properties like Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts and LXR Hotels & Resorts. No matter where you find yourself in the world, you’re likely to have a Hilton property as an option.

Earning Hilton Honors points is a great way to save money on hotel rooms and a reason to try out a different property that’s always been on your bucket list. But what are Hilton Honors points worth, exactly?

Bankrate’s Hilton Honors points valuation

Hilton doesn’t follow an award calendar telling you exactly how many points you’ll need for each hotel level. Instead, it opts for dynamic pricing, meaning your points will go much further at some properties than at others.

This pricing structure makes determining the “average” Hilton points value difficult because both the cash price and points price of each property will change from day to day. The value listed below is based on rewards availability, the average value across several different properties and any additional fees you might have to pay if you use points.

Hilton Points value

The Points Guy values Hilton Honors points at 0.6 cents per point as of July 2020, meaning 100,000 Hilton points would be worth $600 when booking a Hilton hotel room.

Now, this number isn’t set in stone. Instead, you should treat it as a baseline when comparing hotels. Properties with a points value greater than 0.6 cents each would be considered a good deal, while those with lower values wouldn’t.

How to transfer Hilton points

To transfer Hilton points to one of its travel partners, you’ll first need to set your preferred travel partners in your Hilton Honors account. Navigate to your account preferences and choose the program you want to transfer to from the drop-down list. You’ll need to enter your account number to link your two rewards accounts together.

Once you’ve chosen your transfer partner, go to the Hilton points exchange to complete your transfer. Select your rewards partner from the list and check the exchange rate between the two programs. If you’re OK with it, hit “next” to choose how many points to send to the other program and complete the exchange.

Redeeming Hilton Honors points

Hilton Honors points have the best value when you use them to book rooms at Hilton hotels. Yes, you can use them with one of the transfer partners listed in this guide, but the cash-equivalent value is so incredibly low that it’s usually not worth it.

Unless you have hundreds of thousands of points accumulated and you never plan to stay in a Hilton hotel again, you’re better off holding onto your points for your next hotel stay and either paying for your other travel in cash, buying points directly from the other program or using a rewards credit card to earn the extra points you need.

Are Hilton points right for you?

Pros of Hilton points

  • Plenty of choices. Hilton has more than 6,000 properties, giving you a lot of options to use your Hilton Honors points.
  • Both budget and luxury options. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to travel in luxury or save every dollar (or point) possible, you can find a hotel within Hilton’s portfolio to match your style.
  • Easy to earn. The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® card currently offers a 130,000-point bonus for new card members when you spend at least $2,000 in the first three months. Plus, you’ll earn 12 points for every dollar you spend on Hilton purchases.

Cons of Hilton points

  • Low overall value. While the points are easy to earn, they don’t go as far as other rewards points.
  • You can lose your points. If you don’t have any account activity for 15 consecutive months, you can lose your account and all the points you’ve accumulated in it.
  • Limited redemption options. While you do have the option to transfer, the limited value makes it difficult to use your points for anything other than nights at a Hilton hotel.

The bottom line

If you’re looking for a hotel rewards program that will let you earn free nights, Hilton Honors is a great choice. While the program’s points value is perhaps lower than other brands, you can still earn them quickly by staying at Hilton properties and using a co-branded Hilton credit card.
