All eyes are on Washington, D.C., this month—and today, there’s another reason to pay attention to the nation’s capital. Hotel Zena, a new hotel that celebrates the achievements of women, is the focus of the new episode of AD Visits, up now on the @ArchDigest Instagram feed.
Dawson Design Associates was the design firm behind the project, with principal Andrea Sheehan serving as the curator. The hotel’s focal point is its art collection, which features more than 60 commissioned works that celebrate female empowerment. In the video, Natalie Vachon, Hotel Zena’s director of marketing, walks viewers through the collection, which includes a piece by Sheehan and Julie Coyle Art Associates depicting the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg made out of 20,000 hand-painted tampons, and a wall-wrapping work in the restaurant crafted from more than 12,000 protest buttons from feminist marches. There’s also a 50-foot wooden serpent that hangs from the lobby ceiling. “The serpent is a symbol of rebirth, a symbol of transformation,” Vachon says in the video. “She acts as a silent guardian watching over us, watching over our guests wherever we are.”
Explore the hotel’s one-of-a-kind collection in the episode, and look out for the next installment of AD Visits on November 30.
