Review: Hilton Honors American Express Card | The Ascent - Motley Fool

This card comes with several attractive perks, especially for frequent travellers.

Big sign-up bonus

You'll get the chance to earn 80,000 Hilton Honors points if you spend $1,000 in three months. This is an extremely generous sign-up bonus for a credit card with no annual fee, especially considering the relatively low spending requirement.

If you plan to travel anywhere with a Hilton hotel -- most places, really -- you'll be able to use these bonus points for a free stay. The sign-up bonus alone is enough to get you a night at some of the fanciest Hilton hotels or over a week at select budget hotels. Keep in mind that if you currently have or have ever had this credit card, you won't be eligible for the welcome bonus.

Generous rewards rate

Earn 7 points per $1 at Hilton hotels and 5 points per $1 at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations. That's about as good as it gets for a no-annual-fee credit card. If you stay with Hilton and spend a lot on food and gas, you'll accumulate points in no time.

That said, if you stay at Hilton hotels regularly, it might be a better idea to get one of the hotel chain's annual-fee credit cards. These cards earn at an even higher rate. Plus, they provide additional Hilton benefits. These two perks easily offset the annual fee.

Complimentary Silver status with a path to Gold

You'll get complimentary Silver status with Hilton Honors just for holding this card. That gives you 20% more points on your Hilton stays on top of the 7x points you earn with the card. You'll also get your fifth night free on reward stays and two complimentary water bottles at check-in.

The card also offers a path to Gold status if you spend $20,000 in a calendar year. Gold status gets you an 80% points bonus on stays, potential room upgrades, free continental breakfast, and milestone bonuses.

No annual fee and no foreign transaction fees

The cherry on top is that this credit card comes with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. It's rare for a credit card to offer this high a rewards rate and sign-up bonus without an annual fee. And it's also rare to find a no-annual-fee credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. Most no-annual-fee credit cards charge a 3% fee on all purchases you make while abroad.
