Developer buys 75-year-old Tahoe Biltmore hotel - SF Gate

The historic Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino has been purchased by a California developer that promises to turn the location into a "branded marquee destination" for the region.

According to Washoe County records, EKN Development Group dropped $56.8 million for the property. Before them, it was owned by Boulder Bay LLC, which purchased the casino for $28.6 million in 2007. Boulder Bay had intended to renovate and redevelop the Biltmore, but the "project stalled amid funding concerns," the Associated Press reported.

Uncertainty has been a part of the Biltmore's story since the beginning. Construction on the casino, which nearly straddles the state line along Crystal Bay, began in 1946. After years of construction delays and funding snafus, the hotel opened in June 1948. The disastrous opening day media event was lustily recounted by San Francisco Examiner columnist Freddie Francisco.

The electricity cut out during the proceedings and, along with it, the water in rooms. When the power came back on, hotel guests who had opened their taps, found no water and then wandered off to carouse, found their sinks overflowing.

"Large, moist stains appeared on the ceiling thereof and it became necessary for the management (wild eyed owners, partners, sub-partners, et al.) to go on a wild tap-turning expedition throughout the hotel," Francisco wrote. "It is said that they encountered some interesting experiences en route through their de luxe suites."

"The Tahoe Biltmore has been under wraps for a long, long time. If all of the shirts that have been lost in the deal were thrown in a pile, they’d add up to a full day’s wash," the columnist joked.

Opening day jitters aside, the casino became known for its luxury accommodations and celebrity acts; Lena Horne performed during the Biltmore's first summer season. In more recent years, it was treasured by locals for its now inflation-adjusted $1.99 breakfast special.

EKN Development Group says more details will be released soon on the Biltmore project. Its portfolio includes a number of hotels, outlet malls and shopping centers.

"The design of this project will introduce an unparalleled hospitality experience that will accentuate Lake Tahoe’s natural scenery and beauty, while embracing the distinctive and pristine characteristics of the region," EKN Development Group CEO Ebbie Khan Nakhjavani said in a statement.
