It’s quite a good day for those with American Express cards. In addition to Amex adding new dining and wireless credits to select co-branded credit cards, there are also some new spending offers on Hilton and Marriott cards. I wanted to take a look at those in this post, and talk a bit more about whether or not they’re worth it.

In this post:

Hilton Amex card spending bonuses

Co-branded Amex Hilton Honors personal cards are offering the following spending bonuses:

  • Earn 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points when you spend $5,000
  • You can earn up to 100,000 bonus Hilton Honors points, which you’d earn after $50,000 worth of spending

In order to take advantage of this:

  • This is valid for purchases between when you enroll and June 30, 2021
  • Bonus points will post 8-12 weeks after completing eligible spending
  • This is valid for those who had a card prior to January 1, 2021

Are these spending offers worth it?

For those who would ordinarily use their co-branded Hilton or Marriott cards for spending, obviously this is an exciting development. What about those of us who have Hilton and Marriott cards primarily for the perks, and who don’t actually put much spending on the cards? That’s a bit trickier.

Everyone’s situation is going to be different, based on their portfolio of credit cards, which cards they use for everyday spending, which cards they use for bonus categories, and how much they value points.

For some context on my situation:

If spending in the right increments (and that’s a major barrier), I’d earn the following number of points with these two cards:

  • The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card would offer the equivalent of an additional 1x Bonvoy points per dollar spent, for a total of 7x Bonvoy points on Marriott spending, 4x Bonvoy points on restaurants and flights, and 3x points on all other spending
  • The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card would offer the equivalent of an additional 2x Honors points per dollar spent, for a total of 16x Honors points on Hilton spending, 9x Honors points on flights, car rentals, and US restaurants, and 5x Honors points on all other spending

I have a hard time getting excited about this based on my valuation of points and my credit card portfolio. Sure, the Hilton Aspire offers a great return on Hilton hotel spending, but I’m unlikely to spend $5,000 at Hiltons. Other than that, I tend to think I do better with other cards.

That being said, I do think this will interest many looking to earn hotel points, given how few other efficient ways there are to earn Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy points. In particular, earning 3x Bonvoy points per dollar spent on a Marriott card is similar to the value proposition of the SPG Amex (for this limited period, at least).

Furthermore, the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card (review) offers a free weekend night certificate when you spend $15,000 on the card in a calendar year. So if you can stack that with earning bonus points, it absolutely could make sense.

Bottom line

Amex has rolled out some potentially valuable new spending bonuses on co-branded Hilton and Marriott credit cards. Everyone’s situation will differ — personally I don’t see myself taking advantage of these offers based on the other cards I have and my overall current points balances, but for a lot of other people these offers could make a lot of sense.

Do you plan on taking advantage of these Hilton or Marriott spending bonuses?
