Hilton adds more state titles to decorated HS career - 247Sports

LSU wide receiver signee Chris Hilton is known for his accolades on the football field, taking home a state championship at Zachary High thanks to his game-winning touchdown and leaving high school ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 5 wide receiver prospect.

Now, he's put a final bow on a decorated track-and-field career, taking home two more state titles over the weekend.

At the LHSAA State Championships, held on LSU's campus, Hilton took home a win in the Class 5A finals in both the high jump and the 400-meter dash.

In the 400-meter dash, Hilton clocked a personal best 47.50 to secure the outdoor state title. That followed up a state title in February during the indoor season, where his winning time at 50.71 seconds.

As for the high jump, there hasn't been many better to come through Louisiana in recent years than Hilton.

This past weekend, his state title winning jump came at 6-07.50, and it solidified back-to-back wins in indoor and outdoor season. For Hilton, it was a fitting end after the COVID-19 pandemic cut short his junior season, which likely would have kept him on pace for even bigger marks. As a freshman, Hilton won the state title in the high jump by clearing 7-feet, and then again as a sophomore as he once held the nation's best high school mark with a jump of 7-feet, 1/4 inch. For perspective, LSU star and multi-time NCAA Champion J'Vaughn Harrison's winning jump at the 2021 SEC Championships during indoor season was 7' 2.50".

At The Opening in 2019, which followed up Hilton’s sophomore year on the football field, the Baton Rouge native clocked a 4.45 40-yard dash, a 4.33 shuttle and a 36.40-vertical jump.

Ahead of the NFL Draft, LSU wide receiver coach Mickey Joseph likened Hilton to Ja'Marr Chase, who won the Biletnikoff Award at LSU as the nation's best receiver before being selected with the No. 5 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I think he's a kid that can come in and contribute right away," Joseph said on The Jordy Culotta Show. "I think he's the next one that's going to walk across the (draft) stage one day."

For Hilton, the reality is clear that playing time is available after Chase, Terrace Marshall Jr, Justin Jefferson, Racey McMath and Stephen Sullivan were all drafted and are now gone from the wide receiver room of the past two years. And given the impressive debut performance from freshman Kayshon Boutte, the staff isn't hesitating to put the best players on the field regardless of age.

"Basically, when I had that conversation with Coach Mickey about how they'd use me in the offense and where they saw me playing, that was big," Hilton said. "He basically told me he sees me as a slot guy, but I can also play outside, too. It (Boutte) just showed you if you have a good enough skill set, they'll put you anywhere."

Hilton joins a wide receiver haul that also includes three other Louisiana natives in Walker's Brian Thomas Jr., St. Thomas More's Jack Bech and the Acadiana area's Malik Nabers. LSU also signed Mississippi's No. 1 overall prospect in Deion Smith, who was the lone early-enrollee of the wide receivers in LSU's 2021 class.
