Section V wrestling: Hilton, Spencerport, Wayne win team titles at sectionals - Democrat & Chronicle

The Hilton Cadets, Pittsford Panthers and Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets wrestling teams have crossed paths a handful of times this high school season.

Hilton won the latest tie-up Saturday in its gymnasium, as the Cadets finished on top of the team scores for the Section V Class A1 Tournament.

Four-time New York State champion Greg Diakomihalis at 126 pounds began a group of four Hilton Cadets who won their weight classes. Ryan Hinman, Hilton's 138-pounder and Ruvim Poplavskiy at 160, also reached finals, to help the Cadets score 282.5 points, 39 more than runner-up Rush-Henrietta. Pittsford finished in third.

Diakomihalis earned his fifth sectional class championship, while Rocco Camillaci became a three-time champion of this tournament, with a win by technical fall over Rush-Henrietta 126-pounder Mijid Refaai. Ryan Burgos, a state champion in 2019, emerged on top in the 138-pound weight class, Collin Burns at 285, after a pin of Rush-Henrietta heavyweight Damian Dinatale in 3 minutes, 22 seconds.

Past public school state champion Jayden Scott, a 132-pound sophomore, joined 99-pound Rush-Henrietta teammate Brandon Tanner, 152-pounder Karamvir Hothi and 182-pounder Jaden Hall, as class champions at Hilton.

Pittsford had four sectional class champions: 145-pounder Nick Sanko, who placed at the 2019 state championships as a 138-pound freshman, John Santowski at 170, Louis Rocca at 220, and Max Murphy, who defeated Rush-Henrietta's Mike Watts with the ultimate tie-breaker to win the 195 final, 3-2.

Webster Schroeder wrestlers had the 106 and 113 finals covered, as three Warriors were finalists among those two weight classes. Joe Berenson at 106 and Anthony Surace at 113 won their weight divisions.

The top six wrestlers in each weight class and classification advanced to SuperSectionals, Section V's state tournament qualifier, Feb. 14-15 at The College at Brockport.

Hilton, Pittsford and Rush-Henrietta shared the Monroe County Division I regular season title, after they each won five of their six league dual meets.

Pittsford won all five of its matches, including 45-35 over Hilton, during the pool round of Palmyra-Macedon's dual meet tournament in December. Later that month, no team topped Class A2 Spencerport in the Monroe County Championships, as Rush-Henrietta, Hilton and Pittsford took second- through fourth-place.

The next Hilton-Pittsford matchup went to the Panthers, 39-37 on Jan. 18, despite a lineup for the Cadets somewhat rejuvenated by wrestlers who were injured earlier in the season, including Diakomihalis.

Rush-Henrietta defeated Pittsford 46-27 to take third-place in the third edition of the Section V Dual Meet Wrestling Championships. The Royal Comets also defeated Pittsford 38-27 on Jan. 29. Hilton edged Rush-Henrietta, 40-38 the next day.

Class A2

Spencerport, the highest state-ranked team in Section V, was a runaway winner of the Section V Class A2 Tournament at Canandaigua.

The Rangers, No. 2 in the New York State Sportswriters Association Division I or large schools state rankings, were the only team in Canandaigua to score 300 or more points, with 319.65. Brockport was the runner-up with 206.5, followed by Webster Thomas (185.5).

Spencerport wrestlers won back-to-back weight classes at 99 (Cal Russo) and 106 (Sean Cullen), 138 (Jake Scherbyn) and 145 (Mason Wersinger), then 182 (Jake Aina) and 195 (Silas Egenlauf), before 285-pounder Michael Nanna made it seven class champions for the team.

Class B1

If there is such thing as an upset in high school sports, the Wayne Eagles may have pulled off one at the Section V Class B1 Tournament.

Wayne edged state-ranked Palmyra-Macedon 200.5 to 198 at the top of the scoreboard.

Will Tennity was the only weight class champion among Wayne's wrestlers. Tennity won the 132 final by fall, when he pinned David Brown of the Livonia/Wayland-Cohocton merged team in 3:53.

Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Anthony Noto remains on track to win a fourth state title, after his pin of Marcus-Whitman/Penn Yan's Ayden Mowry in 59 seconds. Another state champion needed a little less time to win his sectional class final.

Jace Schafer, a Division II or small schools 99-pound state champ in 2019, pinned Vinny Chiccino, who represented the Williamson/Marion/Sodus team, in 57 seconds. Dominic Affronti at 113, Kaleb Burgess at 138 and Ethan Ferro at 145 and Josh Shafer at 195 won sectional class weight divisions out of the Palmyra-Macedon lineup.

Palmyra-Macedon is No. 8 in the state, according to the NYSSWA Division II rankings.

Class B2

Canisteo-Greenwood, which is one slot ahead of Palmrya-Macedon in the Division II state rankings at No. 7, finished No. 1 at the Section V Class B2 Tournament at Warsaw.

Pavilion/York's Ryan Caudill and LeRoy's Andrew Englerth were named the meet's most outstanding lower and upper weight wrestlers, respectively. Letchworth's Brian Baker-Herter was presented an outstanding character award.

Xavier DeJesus-Remchuk won an all-Canisteo-Greenwood match at 99 pounds. Canisteo-Greenwood teammates Lucas Mason at 106 and Braidon Woodward (113) also were weight class champions. There were three champions with Letchworth: Kaul Runfola (170), Evan Reding (182) and Baker-Herter (120).

Warsaw matched that total with Adam Grover (132), Nate DeGroff (195) and Ethan Woodward (220). Seamus Costello (145) and Mike Raschiatore (285) returned to East Rochester as champions, while Le Roy also had two first-place finishers: Joe Brennan (126) and Englerth (160).

Class B3

Alexander's Mitchell Gaiser and Bolivar-Richburg's Tyler Smith were named the outstanding wrestlers at the lower and upper weights of the Section V Class B3 Tournament, respectively.

Gaiser pinned Caledonia-Mumford's Isaac Crane 1:59 into the 132 final at Bolivar-Richburg. Tyler Smith finished the 220 final with Lyndonville's Mario Fidanza in 50 seconds. Smith was among five Wolverines who won their weight classes.
