$49M Canopy by Hilton now open in Grand Rapids - MLive.com

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Downtown Grand Rapids' newest hotel officially opened its doors Tuesday.

The 8-story, 155-room Canopy by Hilton is located at Studio Park, the $160 million entertainment, residential, office and retail development located just south of Van Andel Arena. The hotel was announced in January 2018.

“We’re just excited to emerge in the Grand Rapids market,” said Tricia Shangle, who oversees sales and marketing at the $49 million hotel, 131 Ionia Ave. SW.

The hotel is owned and operated by Mount Pleasant-based Lodgco Hospitality. The company owns and operates 18 hotels in Michigan and two in Florida.

In addition to the Canopy by Hilton, the company owns two other properties in the Grand Rapids area: Holiday Inn Express and Suites at 358 River Ridge Dr. NW in Walker, and Hampton Inn and Suites at 433 Dudley Place NE, near the Medical Mile, in Grand Rapids.

Originally, the Canopy by Hilton was expected to open on June 2, Shangle said. But because of construction delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the hotel’s opening was delayed until today.

Canopy by Hilton describes itself as a “local experience with a boutique hotel feel, plus delightful extras that help you relax and revive.” The price of a room fluctuates, but on Tuesday costed between $209 to $259 per night.

The hotel features two restaurants: Portico, on the first floor, features American-style food, and Knoop, a rooftop bar and restaurant, offers Dutch and German-inspired small plates. Menu items at Knoop include soft pretzels and craft cocktails.

The hotel and tourism industry have taken a big hit because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shangle said a lot of companies have reduced or eliminated business travel, which has hurt occupancy levels throughout the hotel industry. However, she said that she and her colleagues have “seen some light.”

“Travel is starting to pick up, especially in the leisure segments,” she said. “So those weekends --- a lot of people are staying in Michigan and doing more of a staycation or traveling within the state instead of going regionally.”

Like other businesses, Canopy by Hilton is taking precautions to limit spread of COVID-19. The hotel’s restaurants will have reduced capacity, and cleaning and disinfecting procedures have been strengthened.

Canopy by Hilton joins several other new and planned hotels in downtown Grand Rapids.

A 12-story, 160-room Hyatt Place hotel opened in September 2019 at 140 Ottawa Ave. NW, a 250-room Embassy Suites by Hilton opened at 710 Monroe Ave. NW in April 2019, and work is ongoing at a 147-room Residence Inn by Marriott at Ionia Ave. NW.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Canopy by Hilton at Studio Park," said J.D. Loeks, whose company, Studio C, developed Studio Park. “It perfectly meets our goal of bringing world-class amenities with a local flair to the heart of Grand Rapids.”
