Back to school brings a lot of changes this year. In Hilton, one church wants to let teachers know they’re behind them all the way.
Rebecca Lappas has taught Global History in Hilton for 27 years. Putting the finishing touches on her classroom at Hilton High School on Tuesday, she was glad to be back.
“It’s exciting,” said Lappas. “I’ve been out since March and it looks a lot different.”
That’s because of the pandemic. Reopening schools now comes with social distancing, lots of cleaning and mask-wearing for everyone. It goes without saying, this year is unique.
“I feel like I'm in a dream,” said Lappas. “When I wake up, I say to myself, ‘OK, this is how it's going to be,’ and it is different.”
The changes and challenges of a new school year are appreciated in the Hilton community. To show that, members of Hilton United Methodist Church served free lunch to Hilton teachers, administrators and other staff. It’s their way of saying “thank you.”
“I want them to know that we appreciate them in the midst of all that they're dealing with,” said Pastor Jennifer Green.
Free lunch provided a break in one of the final days of training for teachers before Hilton schools reopen this week.
“We’re so grateful,” said Lappas of the gesture, which included a blessing of the bottled water the church served.
“It’s gonna be a really, really tough year,” said Green. “We understand that, and we want it to just say we love you and we appreciate you.”
A small gesture of thanks, which goes a long way.
