New hotel coming to Superior's downtown - WDIO

"This is part of the resurgence of Superior that's just been taking place the last couple of years," Paine said.

Mayor Paine joined a group of others in breaking ground on the new Cobblestone Hotel & Suites that will be located at Tower Avenue & North 11th Street.

"It's going to be 60 room, primarily suite hotel. The unique piece is it will have a high end chop house in it called Wissota Chophouse," said Cobblestone Hotels CEO Brian Wogernese. "We have al a carte steaks and sides like you'd see at your traditional chop house, but then we have a big, what we call shareables menu which is basically tapas with almost about 20 items," he said.

The project has been in the works for about five years, but Cobblestone wasn't always considering Superior.

"Superior actually approached us, so it wasn't on our radar honestly because it's a little bigger than some of the markets that we go to," said Wogernese.

That all changed once they saw the downtown area.

"We're really excited about these downtown infill sites. It gets people to come to stay downtown. They can park, they can eat with us, or they can go walk to another restaurant. Do some shopping. Gives it that bigger city feel but not having to be in a huge city," said Wogernese.

Mayor Paine is ecstatic his city was chosen.

"I have been excited about this since I first walked into the Cobblestone in Chippewa Falls," Paine said.

Once constructed, he says it will be beneficial to everyone in downtown.

"A hotel is filled with customers, they're not just guests. They have to eat dinner, they go shopping, they buy things, and visit places in our downtown. That's good for everybody. That means that the businesses that are already here are going to do better," Paine said.

Citywide, Paine says there has been almost $50 million in new developments across the city in the last three years.

The hope is this one gives new life to downtown.

The City of Superior expects the hotel to open sometime next year, but there is no set date for construction to be finished.

While Cobblestone is based out of Wisconsin, they also just recently signed a franchise agreement for a new Cobblestone Hotel & Suites in International Falls.

The property will feature four floors and 87 guest rooms.
