New hotels are on a roll in many suburban communities most notably in Rosemont, Des Plaines and Park Ridge.

The Journal & Topics has reported extensively on the development of three new hotels in Rosemont near Mannheim and Higgins roads. We’ve also led the local coverage on the building of two new soon-to-be-completed hotels at or near Touhy and Greco avenues.

At Des Plaines City Council’s next regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 7, developers of a planned new hotel named Home2Suites at 1700 S. Higgins Rd. are ready to submit plans and start the process of securing Planned Unit Development approval from the city. That development will be located next to a large office building east of the old Soo Line railroad tracks and across the street from Rosemont.

Also at this time, long-awaited plans for a new 108-unit hotel on Higgins Road just east of Dee Road on Park Ridge’s south side, appear to be entering a new approval stage.

The Scarlett Hotel Group wants city approval to construct a hotel on the former Mr. K Garden Center property at 1440 W. Higgins. According to Richard Peters of the city’s community development department, negotiations regarding likely financial incentives to the owners have been underway. The matter is expected to be part of the city council’s next agenda on Tuesday, Sept. 7. What do all these hotels have in common? They’re close to O’Hare International Airport.

In a related item, Park Ridge will welcome Drew Awsumb as a new director of the community development department next week…

The Des Plaines Self-Help Closet & Pantry is preparing for a 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Des Plaines Elks Lodge. Since its humble founding in the basement of a local church, the pantry has provided food and clothing for thousands of needy Des Plaines residents…

A quick check shows that the GoFundMe page created months ago by supporters of the Methodist Campground has failed to gain any kind of traction. The amount of money raised thus far is only $2,950. The goal is $500,000 to pay for numerous improvements to many of the campgrounds structures, etc…

The subject of a proposed 125 townhome project on the former Grazie Restaurant property along Oakton Street in Des Plaines, will not be brought up at city council’s Sept. 7 meeting as first thought. M/I Homes wants until early October to put together a plan that 5th ward Ald. Carla Brookman is advocating requiring water storage at the north end of the parcel rather at the southeast corner.

A meeting involving Brookman, the city, and M/I was conducted recently where the developers indicated they will try to accommodate what Brookman is seeking. However, according to City Manager Mike Bartholomew, while M/I is willing to present a revised plan, it still has to determine if the changes are practical and affordable.
