It might have been the sultry singing of “The Blonde Bombshell,” or her daring halter-top and mid-drift dresses that made men seem to love her and women want to be like her.
Nevertheless, Marilyn Monroe was like Hollywood royalty in the late 1950s and early 60s, and Fadi Achour, general manager of the Delta Hotels by Marriott, is hoping to capture that Marilyn magic for guests with the opening of a new lounge inside the airport lodging spot.
A grand opening was held recently at the hotel at 31500 Wick Road in Romulus.
It featured a five-piece Motown band, Marilyn’s favorite hors d’oeuvres and cocktails — including Marilyn’s Cocktail, a concoction of champagne, apple brandy and grenadine.
Months of research went into finding out as many favorite things of the icon and infusing them into the lounge and hotel.
Achour said her favorite margaritas, including “Some Like it Hot,” and “A Perfect Kiss” are at the top of the list for drinks.
There is a menu in the lounge and it embraces all things Marilyn
The lounge is decorated with a multitude of Monroe memorabilia.
Achour explained that back in 2017 when the hotel underwent a renovation, several Andy Warhol pieces featuring Monroe were displayed.
The general manager said he decided to extend that vibe and Marilyn’s Lounge is an extension of the tribute to the star.
He said it has given people who otherwise had nowhere to go in the area a destination to visit.
The hotel even has a Monroe suite in the hotel.
Achour said there is only one, and it is the most expensive room in the hotel.
Guests don’t seem to be discouraged by the price tag. In fact, Achour said people are inspired.
He said he has a regular guest that books the room when he comes to town.
Once word began to spread about the hotel theme, Achour said they began getting contributions from people who had collections of Marilyn Monroe they were willing to share.
Putting it together has been an underestimated success for the general manager.
He anticipated about 50 people would show up to the grand opening ceremony, but that number actually doubled.
Among the guests was an actress out of Troy who was a Marilyn impersonator for the affair.
“She was a huge hit,” Achour said.
In fact, having her there was such a perfect touch for the occasion Achour said she has agreed to return on Fridays beginning on Oct. 8.
Whether or not a fan of the serenade to the president for his birthday or the blowing dress standing over a Manhattan subway grate, Achour hopes the legendary model/actress will draw in visitors and to see why “gentlemen prefer blondes.”
