A Jersey Shore LGBTQ landmark is temporarily closing its doors amid a change in ownership.

The Hotel Tides in Asbury Park, a Seventh Avenue staple since it opened in 1885, will close its restaurant Sept. 27 and its hotel Oct. 1, owner Sandy Morrison told NJ Advance Media Monday. The closure comes in anticipation of a sale that is expected to be finalized in early October.

“It’s bittersweet, I’m sad. It’s my second family, we’ve been with pretty much the same staff for 11, 12 years,” Morrison said. “It was a real local spot where the local community felt at home.”

The beloved boutique inn is known for its fine dining — it was named the best restaurant in Asbury Park in 2019 by NJ.com — as well its pool scene and a warm staff became a mainstay of the Asbury Park’s flourishing LGBQT community over the last two decades.

The building was put on the market at the end of 2020 with an asking price of $4.1 million said Suzanne Crosby, a real estate agent with Woodbridge-based Sitar Realty. The new owners paid less than that for both the hotel and restaurant, she said, but would not confirm an exact price. They have been under contract since April, and the process of transferring the liquor license to the new owners has drawn out the deal.

Crosby said the prospective new owners, who have not yet been made public, are Asbury Park locals and intend to make renovations to reopen the hotel and restaurant in 2022.

“We really took our time to find the right buyer,” Crosby said. “I don’t really know what their plans are, but I know that they’ve made the current owners feel like they will take this property and do good for the community with it.”

Hotel Tides General Manager Ryan Jimenez posted the news of the closure on the hotel’s Facebook page Sunday, calling it “the end of an era.”

Morrison and her husband, Doug, purchased The Hotel Tides in 2004 and spent three years renovating to give it new guest rooms, a new bar, its now-signature in-ground pool and its acclaimed restaurant. Now they are now retiring.

“The timing worked out, (owning it) just ran its course with us,” Morrison said. “It’s exciting to have a fresh look at the place, a new buyer. Hopefully we’ll continue the tradition of being a local spot. The best kept secret, as various people would say.”
