According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, more than 120 hotels will launch across Africa in 2021, including standout schemes from Hyatt Regency, Radisson Blu and Conrad.

An abundance of planned hotel openings this year means that travellers can look forward to discovering new places to stay all the way from Cairo to Durban. Here, we look at five of Africa’s most notable arrivals.

Hyatt Regency Cairo West

The impending launch of Hyatt Regency Cairo West, planned for the first quarter of this year, will mark the return of the Hyatt brand to Egypt’s capital city. It’s located within the Pyramids Heights Business Park, which places it close to many corporations as well as landmarks like the Great Pyramids of Giza and soon-to-open Grand Egyptian Museum. This new property is being developed by ALDAU Development with architectural design courtesy of Simeon Halstead Associates and interior design from Design Lab.

The 230-room, five-star hotel promises spacious guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pyramids or hotel pool and gardens, along with design inspired by Egyptian culture. Facilities for business and leisure travellers will include five restaurants, bars and lounges, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, an outdoor heated pool and a casino, as well as event space including a 4,628 sq ft ballroom.

Radisson Blu Hotel Durban Umhlanga

Radisson Blu’s new urban resort lies within the mixed-use Oceans Umhlanga complex, which also houses luxury apartments and a high-end shopping mall. This site is located on land sloping down from the city to Durban’s famous beaches. LYT Architects, Ruben Reddy Architects, Elphick Proome Architecture and Eastern Cape Office are overseeing the design.

Planned to make its debut in the second quarter of the year, the property comes with 207 rooms and suites offering signature Radisson Blu services, along with an all-day dining restaurant, rooftop outdoor bar and terrace, lobby bar and coffee shop. Additional facilities will include a business class lounge, spa, gym, outdoor pool, and meeting and events area.

Park Hyatt Marrakech

The early 2021-planned Park Hyatt Marrakech is undoubtedly among the continent’s most highly anticipated openings. Part of the Al Maaden development, the 181-key resort will be adorned with unique design features and both formal and private gardens. Of the resort’s villas, 45 will come with living rooms, dining rooms, fireplaces and private pools.

The property will house a resort centre, private villas, meeting residences, a speciality restaurant, a luxury spa and anartist’s medina, as well as two main pools – one by the restaurant and an infinity-edge alternative overlooking the 18-hole golf course and Atlas Mountains beyond. Representing irrigation basins in the region, a water feature will separate the resort from the golf course.

Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Addis Ababa

On opening, this Radisson Blu property will become the brand’s second hotel in Ethiopia’s capital city. The upper-upscale newbuild property, which is due to be ready in the first quarter of 2021, forms part of Radisson Hotel Group’s plans to further establish the Radisson Blu brand across the continent. It’s located on Bole Road, 3 km from the international airport and close to the Millennium Convention Centre.

Altogether, the hotel will have 165 guest rooms, an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant, a bar, a lobby lounge and a business class lounge. The property will also incorporate almost 1,000 sq m of meeting space for business travellers, along with a gym and spa for relaxation.

Conrad Rabat Arzana

This newbuild Conrad resort close to Rabat benefits from an elevated waterfront position overlooking a lagoon and beach, providing scenic views of the Atlantic. Part of the Arzana development, this exciting hospitality scheme aims to connect guests with the spectacular surroundings through lush gardens, ocean views and scenic walks, while also serving up locally inspired culinary experiences.

In terms of facilities, the 120-key property will be home to two restaurants offering all-day dining and specialty cuisine, a lobby bar and a pool lounge, as well as a spa and salon. There’ll also be over 600 sq m of event space, comprising four meeting rooms and a grand ballroom. Conrad Rabat Arzana is due to open in the third quarter of the year.
