An upcoming Portland boutique hotel backed by a Los Angeles-based hotel brand will feature two new restaurants from Submarine Hospitality, the group behind popular local restaurants Ava Gene’s and Tusk, The Oregonian/OregonLive has learned.
Finishing work was underway Monday afternoon at the former Shleifer Furniture building at 509 S.E. Grand Ave., a site most recently home to a temporary homeless shelter. The new hotel, Hotel Grand Stark, comes from the Los Angeles-based Palisociety hotel brand, which is in the middle of a major domestic expansion jump-started in 2019 with the first non-California Palihotel in a historic building near Seattle’s Pike Place Market. The Portland hotel will open in May, according to a spokesperson.
That Seattle hotel featured a second location of The Hart & The Hunter, a critically acclaimed southern restaurant found at a Los Angeles Palihotel. But Hotel Grand Stark looks to be getting a pair of concepts all its own.
Submarine Hospitality, which underwent a restructuring last summer after the group and co-founder Joshua McFadden received criticism from former employees on social media, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. But a recent liquor license application and, before the content was removed Tuesday, the hotel’s website, shed some light of both the hotel and its two separate concepts, Grand Stark Deli and Bar Chamberlain. Here’s what we know so far.
Hotel Grand Stark
The new hotel falls under Palisociety’s independent collection, which also includes Los Angeles’ Silver Lake Pool & Inn, and attempts to “represent an elevated reflection of the creative movements and quirky spirit of Portland, and beyond,” according to the hotel’s website. Hotel Grand Stark will have 57 rooms. Restoration of the century-old masonry building, which operated as a hotel into the 1970s, was overseen through a partnership between Beam Development and Urban Development and Partners working with Works Progress Architecture.
Grand Stark Deli
The hotel’s in-house deli will serve “an approachable all-day menu,” according to the hotel website, with fresh baked English muffins, assorted schmears, house-cured salmon gravlax, breakfast sandwiches as well as deli soups, salads and sandwiches with “thinly sliced meats piled high.”
Bar Chamberlain
This “classic hotel bar” will feature “expertly crafted cocktails” a “largely natural wine list” and throwback hotel restaurant dishes such as burgers, roasted chicken, steak au poivre, crispy oysters, shrimp cocktails and “towering Caesar salads to be eaten with your hands,” the hotel website said.
