IHG’s planning to launch 187 hotels and 38,645 rooms in 2021, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database – here are five openings that will really stand out from the crowd.

Spanning IHG’s diverse portfolio of brands, the hospitality group’s most exciting schemes due to complete this year range from a highly anticipated Six Senses property in New York to InterContinental’s return to Sri Lanka’s capital.

Six Senses New York

One of the year’s most exciting IHG arrivals is Six Senses’ new property in Manhattan, the brand’s first North American hotel. This scheme represents a significant part of The XI, a spectacular development consisting of two twisting towers designed by architect Bjarke Ingels. These towers will sit on a full city-block of West Chelsea, rising above the Hudson River and High Line. The hotel will take up ten floors of No X, with 136 guest rooms and suites; a restaurant, which is just off the High Line; and a cafe with outdoor terrace.

The interiors here are being designed by Parisian firm Gilles & Boissier with neutral colours, natural materials such as light wood, charred wood accent walls and stonework. Asymmetrical walnut doors are set to greet guests at the entrance, while artworks showcase the skill of local artisans. In line with the brand’s focus on wellbeing, the hotel will also house a 45,000 sq ft spa, with features including a vibroacoustic meditation dome, a holistic anti-aging centre and a yoga studio. The hotel is expected to open early 2021.

Kimpton Hotel Grove District Anaheim Resort

The Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand is set to launch its latest property in southern California early this year with the opening of this hotel in the city of Garden Grove, Orange County. The proposed five-star hotel is part of a five-acre mixed-use development by SCG America Group and Archilier Architecture on Harbor Boulevard of the Grove District Resort Anaheim Area. Kimpton’s latest outpost will be joined by a number of shops and restaurants, all just blocks away from Disneyland, the Anaheim Convention Center, Angel Stadium and Honda Center.

The 200-room luxury hotel will be home to two restaurants, a rooftop pool and lounge, and 10,000 sq ft of meeting space; its interiors are being designed by Archilier Architecture in the luxurious Kimpton style. From here, guests will be able to enjoy unobstructed views of the fireworks show at Disneyland from the comfort of several suites and while soaking up the ambience of the rooftop bar. The hotel is planned to make its debut in the first quarter of the year.

InterContinental Colombo

Spanning 480,000 sq ft and rising up to 42 storeys, a towering development in Colombo 3 will house InterContinental’s return to Sri Lanka’s bustling capital. Developed in partnership with Pearl Grand Tower Hotel, the impressive property will consist of 307 rooms, including 47 suites.

The Designspace Architecture-designed scheme will also feature 12,000 sq ft of meeting and banqueting space, with a vast room accommodating up to 400 people the star of the show, and a contemporary business centre; leisure facilities will include a spa and outdoor pool, as well as a fitness centre. On completion, guests will be able to choose between six dining options, with three specialty restaurants and an all-day dining venue already confirmed. All the rooms and suites will be equipped with world-class amenities and many will offer dazzling views of the Indian Ocean.

Kimpton Roatan

The coming year will bolster Kimpton’s presence in the Caribbean with the early 2021 debut of a boutique hotel on West Bay Beach of Roatan Island in Honduras. This stylish hotel, owned and developed by Vista Capital, will launch following a total reimagination of the existing Grand Roatan Resort. Alongside Caribbean architect Lane Pettigrew Associates, the brand is expanding the property to encompass a total of 126 guest rooms, including 43 one- and two-bedroom suites and one presidential suite.

Among the luxurious amenities at the five-star hotel will be a rooftop sky bar with glass-fronted pool, a chef-driven restaurant, a lounge and beach bars, along with an expansive outdoor pool, a luxurious spa, a fitness centre and water-sports facilities. This will all be topped off with 6,000 sq ft of indoor and outdoor event space. Roatan is the largest of Honduras’ Caribbean Bay Islands and is situated by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world’s second largest barrier reef.

Holiday Inn Resort Ho Tram Beach

Further increasing its visibility in Vietnam, IHG is set to debut the newbuild Holiday Inn Resort Ho Tram Beach in the second quarter of 2021. The 502-key property will be geared towards leisure, business and family travellers.

On openings, guests will be able to spend their time enjoying the resort’s swimming pools and taking in the views of the coastline from the 360-degree rooftop bar, and benefitting from direct access to a bowling arcade, a food court, a cinema and a water park.
