UPDATE: While the hotel’s website indicates the hotel is permanently closed, Midway issued a statement late Tuesday indicating the closure is temporary.

“With the unprecedented challenges faced by the hospitality industry in the COVID-19 era, ownership and its capital partners have decided to temporarily close Hotel Alessandra, along with its dining concepts, Lucienne and Bardot Bar,” Robert Williamson, Midway senior vice president for investment management, told the Houston Chronicle. “We view this as a unique opportunity to reevaluate operations, explore ways to enhance our offerings, maximize value and reopen with minimal impact while the industry slowly recovers. Providing an unrivaled hotel and dining experience remains our top priority and we look forward to serving our guests in the near future.”

Midway and Valencia Hotel Group have offered no further comment.

A downtown luxury hotel has permanently closed.

First reported by the Houston Chronicle's Greg Morago, Hotel Alessandra's website states that the hotel at 1070 Dallas St. shuttered on Jan. 6.

The 21-story property, operated by Houston-based Valencia Hotel Group and developed by local real estate company Midway, launched in October 2017 with 223 rooms, a spa, swank Bardot bar and upscale restaurant Lucienne.

Highlighted in Houston Chronicle food critic Alison Cook’s 2018 and 2019 lists of the Top 100 restaurants in Houston, Lucienne featured continental cuisine with a Mediterranean slant from executive chef Jose Hernandez.

Hernandez is formerly of Radio Milano at Hotel Sorella. The award-winning hotel at CityCentre is part of Valencia Hotel Group's portfolio, along with San Antonio's Hotel Valencia Riverwalk and College Station's Cavalry Court.

The hotel industry has struggled during the pandemic. The sector lost 9,100 jobs in March and April, the Houston Chronicle reported in December, which is about a third of all hotel jobs in the region.

A representative for Hotel Alessandra said no further details are available at this time.
