The Indianapolis Colts have shown zero signs that they’re preparing to make a big splash in free agency, which is probably for the best at this point considering that almost nobody remaining on the open market deserves a lucrative contract.
With that being said, however, fans have been up in arms over the team’s unwillingness to splurge this offseason.
Though a chunk of their cap space is being preserved for extensions, we’re not entirely sure what the plan is for all the leftover money.
Some of the Colts’ ample financial resources have been utilized on retaining key players from last season, and there’s something to be said for keeping familiarity on the roster.
The deals that have stuck out the most in this regard were the re-signings of veterans TY Hilton and Xavier Rhodes, both of whom previously looked destined to land elsewhere in free agency.
Ironically enough, Rhodes joined the “Pat McAfee Show” this week to discuss what Hilton returning means for Indianapolis and his emotional response illustrated how well respected he is in the locker room.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway here is that Rhodes was Hilton’s teammate for just one season and was THIS moved by him deciding to re-sign with the Colts. If that isn’t a testament to the kind of person and teammate the four-time Pro Bowler is, then we’re not sure what is.
On a side note, could you imagine the emotion if somebody like Jack Doyle, who’s been grinding it out with Hilton for eight seasons in Indy, was asked to speak on his return? McAfee might’ve had to break out a box of tissues.
In all seriousness, this clip just summarizes everything Hilton means to the Colts’ culture and locker room morale. This team (and city) means everything to him, which helps you understand why he decided that staying was more important than securing a multi-year deal worth millions more in guarantees with another team (ahem, the Ravens).
It remains to be seen if Hilton will consider signing another contract with the Colts next offseason, as he hinted at the possibility of retirement during his latest presser. And given the uncertainty regarding his future, fans in Indy should just sit back and enjoy what could be his final season with the team.
If it’s anything like the run he went on in the second half of last campaign — he racked up 54 receptions for 435 yards and five touchdowns over the final six games — it’s going to be an absolutely spectacular send-off, but we’ll cross that bridge when the time comes.
