BROOK PARK, Ohio -- A former Brook Park hotel known for years as a crime-ridden nuisance has been reduced to rubble.
Demolition of the buildings at 16161 Brookpark Road began April 19 and will take three to four weeks. The teardown was a long time coming, with the property having gone through several owners, a widely publicized 2016 raid, Cuyahoga County Health Department warnings, and numerous local and county court actions.
It took two Brook Park mayoral administrations to finally get through all the government procedures required to eliminate the blighted hotel.
“The prior administration under Mayor (Tom) Coyne worked extremely hard, as did the law department, to get to this day,” said Brook Park Economic Development Commissioner Scott Adams, recalling efforts that continued under current Mayor Mike Gammella and his staff.
Adams said out-of-state owners in 2018 assured city officials that they would “rehabilitate the property.” The cost, however, would have been approximately $6 million.
“Within a very short period of time, they made the move to sell the property,” Adams explained, noting that vagrants made the boarded-up building their home. Interior fixtures, such as plumbing and electrical wiring, “were stripped out” by trespassers seeking scrap materials to sell.
The city filed another criminal complaint in September 2019. Multiple citations for the “very unsafe abandoned nuisance property” followed a few months later. Gammella issued a Notice of Abatement of Nuisance in February 2020, and it took until now for all legalities to be properly executed to physically bring down the building.
“The biggest win here is that we’re removing a huge amount of blight from that area,” Adams said. “When those processes take so long, it hurts the overall ability of the communities to do their job in order to protect and serve the people of Brook Park.”
The owners of Brookpark Leasing LLC, which is located directly behind the site, purchased the property in March and plan to expand their business.
“It’s another linchpin for the redevelopment of Brookpark Road,” Adams said.
“It feels really good, because I know the outcome will be a positive one, with a new building, new jobs and a new tax base for the community.”
