SHOEHORN: A landlocked parcel in the B-2 zone suggested for a hotel in Tuckerton needs a variance to build an access road through a residential neighborhood. (Supplied Image)

It was a full house at Tuckerton Borough Hall on Thursday, Aug. 19 when an application for a 23-room hotel in the woods off Wood Street was to be heard. Residents from Wood, Railroad Avenue and the McConomy section of town came and brought friends to voice their feelings when it was announced the application would be held over until the  Sept. 16 meeting at 7 p.m. in the borough hall.

The application by Lokal 3 Penny LLC of Cape May had a defect, said land use board attorney Robert Shinn. The applicant will have to re-notice properties located within 200 feet.

Shinn also suggested that the public refrain from contacting board members and the mayor on their own. “It’s like a trial; they can’t talk to you about this,” he said.

The application, available for public viewing, is in the town hall and shows the one-story hotel building with pool and hot tub amenities tucked into the woods between the Greenwood Cemetery, McConomy Town and Wood Street. The only access to the building would be an extensive road from the residential neighborhood – an 18-foot-wide thoroughfare located between and behind the Skie and Suralik residences. Otherwise, the parcel is landlocked.

There are extensive wetlands that discharge to Tuckerton’s Lake Pohatcong bordering the area proposed to be developed.

The applicant is asking for a variance to build the access road through the area zoned residential. Where the hotel would be located is zoned B-2 highway business district.  —P.J.
