The NFL didn’t fine Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton this week despite his being called for a personal foul late in his team’s loss to the New York Jets.

No great shock there — the officials generated widespread backlash for what one onlooker described as one of the worst calls of all time.

While leaguewide fine news went live this Saturday for infractions such as taunting, no such fine appeared for Hilton. The lack of a fine from the league office would seem to be a quiet admission that the officials got it wrong.

Those officials, by the way, answered questions about the flag, but didn’t say much. Bengals players were told not to talk about it.

For those out of the loop, Hilton went as low as he possibly could on a third down late in the game for a hit that would have given the ball back to the Bengals with two timeouts and a chance to win it. The ballcarrier met him low and Hilton got flagged in an impossible situation. Frankly, it’s easy to imagine the NFL looking at it next offseason and tweaking the rules now that it showed up at such a key moment and potentially altered the course of a game, if not playoff race.
