More travelers than ever have one of the best deals in travel — a Hilton Free Weekend Night Reward — sitting in their Hilton account.

Hilton Free Weekend Night Rewards are valid at nearly any Hilton property in the world (there are a handful of hotels that don't participate), making this certificate worth up to 120,000 Hilton points, depending on where you use it. Insider's valuations estimate Hilton points value to be 0.6 cents each, on average, making this certificate worth up to $600 — or potentially more if you redeem it at a luxury resort.

Free Weekend Night Rewards come with an expiration date of one year after they are issued. You don't have the power to extend these certificates — use them or lose them. That's an inconvenient policy considering the travel industry's virtual standstill during the past couple of years.

Thankfully, Hilton continues to push the expiration of weekend night certificates. Its latest move schedules all certificates to terminate well into 2022. Here's what you need to know.

There are two big reasons for this uptick in Weekend Night Rewards floating around in the ether.

First, Hilton has been incentivizing members to spend on their Hilton credit cards by offering bonus certificates to targeted cardholders. These cardmembers will earn a free night after enrolling and spending $8,000 by February 28, 2022.

Second, Hilton is offering all-time high welcome bonuses on both the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card and The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card. With either card, you'll receive 130,000 points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of card membership. Plus, earn an additional 50,000 points after spending $10,000 total on purchases in the first 6 months.

Both of these cards come with the ability to earn a Free Weekend Night Reward each calendar year after spending $15,000 on purchases. And the The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card gives you the option to earn a second weekend night reward after spending $60,000 in a calendar year.

Here are the new expiration policies for Hilton free night certificates:

  • Certificates issued through June 30, 2020, now expire July 1, 2022
  • Certificates issued between July 1 and December 31, 2020, expire 24 months from issue date
  • Certificates issued between January 1 and December 31, 2021, expire December 31, 2022
  • Certificates issued between January 1 and December 31, 2022, expire 12 months from issue date

These extensions also apply to Free Night Rewards that weren't earned via an American Express card. If you received a Free Night Reward as a refund of a canceled Advance Purchase reservation in 2020, the above expiration dates apply to you.

In addition, Hilton points earned from eligible purchases on any Hilton American Express card will continue to count as base points toward elite status qualification and lifetime Diamond status through December 31, 2022.

Hilton has also introduced the ability to view your Free Night Rewards, including the total number available, expiration dates, and activity in your online Hilton account. To redeem your Free Weekend Night Reward, you must call Hilton at 800-446-6677.
