Exclusive: New Galveston boutique hotel opening next summer, tied to big-time chef and bar owner - Houston Chronicle

Summer 2022 will see the debut of Hotel Lucine, a Galveston boutique hotel featuring multiple bar and restaurant “experiences” shaped by Houston chef Justin Yu and bar expert Bobby Heugel.

In recent years, Yu and Heugel have branched into restaurateur roles with such concepts as Better Luck Tomorrow and Squable. Now they’re taking that success on the road, to a revamped mid-century motel on the northern stretch of the Galveston Seawall.

The 61-room Hotel Lucine will emerge from the bones of the 1963 Treasure Isle Motel, which until recently was doing business as The Pearl Inn. A well-connected group of finance and hospitality professionals is revitalizing the two-story property from the ground up.

It’s a significant development on the Houston-area hotel scene. Locally, we’ve lagged behind Dallas and Austin when it comes to recycling vintage motels and motor courts into cool new boutique hotels. Houston had nothing along the lines of The Belmont Hotel in Dallas or the Liz-Lambert-era Austin Motel until late last year, when the Night Moves group opened Heights House Hotel on West Cavalcade.

Now comes Hotel Lucine, right down the Gulf Freeway, with its design by Austin’s Kartwheel Studio. Founded by David Clark, the firm is known for its custom furniture, and for modern spaces defined by weathered surfaces and bold art installations. Look for white brick, bleached white oak and native plantings to set the clean new tone at Hotel Lucine. Aged bronze and antique mirrors will add gleam, along with the luminous striations of reeded glass.

The motel’s U-shaped pool courtyard will live on as a transformed centerpiece spilling into a communal Den area. A rooftop bar will offer 180-degree views of the Gulf. The partners say their hope is to create a destination for visitors and locals alike.

Spearheading the partner group is Dave Jacoby, a hotel finance expert who developed a Las Vegas hotel and casino in 2016. He sits on Galveston’s Parks Board and serves as president of the Galveston Historical Society’s board of directors. His wife, Keath Jacoby, is a Galveston native with expertise in marketing — and a useful feel for what she calls her hometown’s unique blend of “assets charm, history [and] weirdness.”

Houstonian Robert Marcus is among the partners, as are Shawn Ullman and Jeffrey Solomon.

Yu says that the role of food and beverage partners for a hotel is something he and Heugel “have been interested in for a long time. We’re extremely excited to be working in Galveston and to be part of the Galveston community.”

They’re tight-lipped about any details. But they’ve “been to Galveston a whole bunch,” says Yu.

And of course he already has a food tip: Fish Company Taco on 23rd Street, where the catch-of-the-day fare comes straight from local fishermen, and the chef, Daya Myers-Hurt, is an alumna of Uchi.

Next summer’s looking better already.
