HOLYOKE — D.Hotel & Suites owners Linda and Peter Rosskothen demonstrated Wednesday how they plan to keep the hotel sanitized and allay any fears travelers might have of the coronavirus.

American Healthy Homes of East Longmeadow will use a hospital grade disinfectant on all surfaces as well as an all- natural biological which will clean the air in the hotel.

But it'll take promotions aimed at in-state travelers -- possibly looking for a quick getaway from the kids after weeks cooped up with stay-at-home orders, homework help and Zoom classroom necessitated by COVID-19 -- to bring back business, Peter Rosskothen said.

"Anybody with kids at home is ready for that," he said. "I think everyone is ready to get out and get away."

The hotel reopens Friday , June 12. The Delaney House Restaurant opened with outdoor seating Wednesday.

But out-of-state travelers are still encouraged to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving in the Bay State -- not so romantic -- and business travel is still all but shut down.

Colleges cancelled graduations, move-out days and campus visits by prospective students and their families, all sources of strong springtime hotel business, Rosskothen said.

Spring weddings have also been cancelled and along with them lodging for out-of-town guests.

Most hotels in the region shut down in March to most travelers except essential workers, military, and air crew stopping over at Bradley International Airport. Most hotels only now reopening.

Rosskothen said the 61-room D.Hotel started taking reservationsn last week in anticipation of Friday's opening.

"To be honest with you we are off to a slow start," he said. "An extremely slow start."

Rosskothen is promoting a private dining option where couples renting a room can get room service meals from the adjacent Delany House . He's promoting D.Hotel& Suites proximity to bicycle trails and stock of bikes visitors can borrow.

He's promoting the outdoor activities -- hikes, boat etc. -- that people can do in Western Massachusetts while social distancing.

"I have my hope up for that," he said. "I think this is the place to come."

Western Massachusetts is easily accessible by car to a large population and , especially once interstate travel rules loosen, an attractive destination.

"No getting on an airplane," he said.

But big attractions are still closed. Six Flags New England hopes to open later this summer. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame hopes to open in July. The Big E is still a question mark,

He also expects business to pick up once the spa is able to reopen.

American Healthy Homes says it uses uses 100% all-natural products to treat and clean residential and commercial spaces. It will use a hospital-grade disinfectant on all surfaces as well as an all- natural biological which will clean the air in the hotel.

D. Hotel & Suites has also stepped up its cleanliness and sanitation procedures:

  • Increased frequency of cleaning of public areas including but not limited to the lobby, elevator, door handles, public bathrooms and spa.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting procedures to clean rooms after guests depart and before the next guest arrives have been increased, paying special attention to high-touch items.
  • Increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting in the spaces where staff members work behind the scenes,
  • Antibacterial hand sanitizers have been placed throughout the property
  • Employee temperature check upon arrival
  • Sneeze guards have been added to the front desk
  • Streamlined check in process to limit contact
