TAMPA — A small appliance caused the fire Sunday morning that forced the evacuation of the 16-floor Westin Tampa Bay hotel in Rocky Point.

A fire broke out on the 13th floor of the hotel at 7627 W Courtney Campbell Causeway. The staff started evacuating the building and called for help just before 9:30 a.m., according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Firefighters arrived and put out the fire, which sent black smoke pouring through the window.

Investigators said the fire was caused by small appliance in unoccupied room 1311 that suffered an “electrical malfunction,” Tampa Fire Rescue announced Monday. The damage estimate is about $18,000.

The hotel was at about 70 percent capacity at the time of the fire, but it hadn’t grown hot enough to trigger the building’s sprinkler system, officials said. No one was injured in the fire.
