Travelers might not be willing to stay in a hotel this summer, sleeping alongside strangers after months of lockdown.
But they might be more likely to give one a chance — if they could book the entire thing.
Shou Sugi Ban House, a 13-room resort and spa in the Hamptons, announced that it is offering a buyout of the whole property for the summer for $1.25 million — or $400,000/month, according to Bloomberg.
Owner Amy Cherry-Abitbol says the move is primarily to protect staffers, so they’re “dealing with the same people for an extended period of time.” The hotel opened just before Memorial Day 2019.
The rental listing, posted by John Vitello of Brown Harris Stevens, details the luxurious amenities that also lend themselves to social distancing. For example, each room has a private entrance that can be accessed from the outside, a garden patio, a gas fireplace and a soaking tub. An extended family could maintain privacy in smaller units while still bunking together for the summer.
Compared to other rentals in this price range, Cherry-Abitbol argues hers — located adjacent to the Parrish Art Museum in Watermill, near Southampton — is one of a kind. In addition to the en-suite guest rooms, the property also boasts a 5,784-square-foot common area complete with an office, a screening room, a library, a lounge, a dining area, a tea bar and an outdoor lounge with a fire pit and a chef’s kitchen.
Meanwhile, the fully-equipped spa features “outdoor hydrotherapy plunge pools, watsu swimming pool, a steam room, sauna, infrared sauna, ice fountain, five treatment rooms and solarium roof deck,” according to the listing. And the 3.1 acres of grounds is “meticulously landscaped” with Japanese gardens, fountains and a cherry orchard.
And renters don’t have to worry about going to a gym to work out with strangers. Shou Sugi Ban House’s open-air fitness pavilion is outfitted with equipment, from weights and balance balls to a built-in TRX and ballet bars.
Add-ons include use of three Tesla cars, a Chris Craft picnic boat and tennis court access, as well as private wellness programming from massages to meditation classes. A culinary team led by Michelin-starred chef Mads Refslund is also available to curate a menu from locally sourced, organic foods.While a skeleton crew for security and to maintain the grounds is included in the price, housekeepers, cooks and other staff members would be an additional cost of about $100,000 per month. But, Cherry-Abitbol admits, that there is wiggle room on the pricing and inclusions.
“The reaction that I’ve received so far is that it’s not overpriced,” she told Bloomberg. “But I do understand that there’s going to be a small population that’s able to [rent it]. It’s negotiable.”
