Stamford Hilton furloughs about 150 workers - CTInsider.com - CT Insider

STAMFORD — The Stamford Hilton is furloughing about 150 workers — becoming the second hotel in the city to announce major job upheaval in response to the coronavirus crisis.

In an April 29 letter that was received Monday by the state Department of Labor, the hospitality-services firm that partners with the Hilton confirmed the furloughs at 1 First Stamford Place.

They affect a range of positions — including banquet, room-service and restaurant servers; room and public-area attendants; line cooks; van drivers; kitchen stewards, front-desk clerks; housekeepers; and engineering and maintenance staff.

“At this time, it is our hope that the furloughs will only be temporary,” LaToya Williams, Atrium Hospitality’s corporate director of human resources, said in the letter. “However, due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we cannot guarantee that they will not be permanent and cannot guarantee a timeline for recall, if employees will be recalled at all.”

The start date for the furloughs was March 12, according to Williams. A message left for Williams asking why the furloughs were not reported sooner was not immediately returned.

The hotel remains open, but the website says that new bookings are available only to guests traveling for an “essential purpose as defined by the state.”

Officials at Unite Here!, the union that represents Stamford Hilton workers, said they have taken a number of steps to assist displaced workers, including opening a hotline to assist with filing unemployment and social services and the launch of a “hardship fund” for members.

“In this moment of crisis, I’ve felt grateful for my union because we are sticking together to support each other,” said Hannah Schmitt, a restaurant server at the Stamford Hilton who has been laid off since March. “We are trying to get employers to re-evaluate their positions to make sure they are taking care of their employees. The support from my coworkers makes me feel strong. We are united and determined to get through this crisis together.”

Unite Here! also organized employees at the Stamford Sheraton, with workers there choosing to join the union in late 2018. Last month, Sheraton informed the labor department that it was cutting about 100 positions at its hotel at 700 E. Main St., in response to a falloff in business sparked by the pandemic.

A number of other hotels in Connecticut have made major job cuts — at least temporarily — as travel and large meetings have dwindled.

The list includes downsizings of 98 staffers at the Mayflower Inn & Spa in Washington; 76 at Collegiate Hotel Group’s properties in New Haven and Storrs; 63 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Windsor Locks; 56 at the Crowne Plaza in Danbury; 52 at the Sheraton in Rocky Hill; and 49 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Milford.

Statewide, about 152,000 worked in the leisure and hospitality sector in March, down 4 percent year over year, according to the Department of Labor. Those numbers only captured a small portion of the massive job losses sparked by COVID-19.
