The Cahuilla Band of Indians announced on Friday plans to reopen its recently expanded Cahuilla Casino Hotel near Anza, Calif., on May 27.

The move came on the same day that the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians announced plans to reopen its Soboba Casino near San Jacinto, also on May 27 — the earliest opening date yet for any of Riverside County's casinos as the California economy starts to pick back up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nearby, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians has a "target reopening timeline" of around June 1 for the Pechanga Resort Casino near Temecula.

The new Cahuilla Casino Hotel is nearly three times the size of the original facility which has been in operation for 24 years. Under construction since October 2018, the new casino had opened its doors but then lock up due to COVID-19 before its scheduled grand reopening, which was set for April 2 and had to be postponed. The hotel features 58 rooms, including suites, and is adjoined to the casino.

Cahuilla Tribal Chairman Daniel Salgado said the plan is to "slowly phase" into opening, to ensure proper distancing.

“We are eager to unveil and share the new Cahuilla Casino Hotel with our guests, team members and the community and we stand by our commitment to protecting the health and safety of all,” Salgado said in the news release. “Our focus during this time of closure has been on implementing protective measures and enhanced sanitary guidelines throughout the new property to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our guests and team members."

The casino has partnered with the San Diego company TruClean to have an antimicrobial surface protectant applied throughout the property — it "stops the growth of microorganisms for up to a year with a single application," according to a news release.

Some of the other protective measures planned for the casino include:

  • Touchless temperature checks for all guests and team members at entrances
  • A face mask requirement for all guests and staff
  • A limit of 250 guests on the gaming floor, and a layout in gaming and dining areas to allow for social distancing
  • Table games limited to three players per table
  • Cleaning of all touch points at least every four hours.
