Finding the best places to stay and eat is the foundation of any good vacation, whether you're the type to squeeze in a fourth meal each day or are perpetually on a mission to find the coolest new boutique hotel . Since the pandemic put travel on hold, the restaurants and hotels we plan trips around have been hit hard , with news of permanent closures coming all too frequently. Gift cards are a great way to support your favorite place from afar (buy one to use at a later date, or for someone you love who lives nearby to use sooner), but for something more tangible, you can shop restaurant merchandise, too. We've rounded up 22 cafés, restaurants, and hotels selling T-shirts, coffee mugs, tote bags, and more, from places you've surely heard of, like Katz's Deli , and lesser-known spots our editors recommend adding to your to-visit list.
For more ways to support, Care of Chan has put together a collection of merchandise, cookbooks, and gift cards from restaurants like Café Kitsuné and Jon & Vinny's , and food writer Helen Rosner is keeping track of restaurant merchandise on her Instagram stories . Branding agency Any Studios is aggregating merch on Swag It Back, too, with new items being added regularly. On the hotel front, Buy Now, Stay Later is selling hotel bonds for hotels around the world, which give you credit for booking later (a $100 gift card turns into a $150 value after 60 days, for example). Buy one now for a stay next summer at Greydon House in Nantucket or the seaside Dexamenes in Greece (a 2020 Hot List winner).
Kopitiam
“Kopitiam, a Malaysian restaurant in New York City's Lower East Side, is now selling its own coffee beans—charcoal-roasted with margarine and sugar—so you can recreate their coffees at home. Owner Moonlynn Tsai, who has been spearheading an initiative to help feed elders in Chinatown, tells me that it's great when cold brewed, and I can't wait to try it.” —Stephanie Wu, articles director

Ace Hotels
Associate editor Megan Spurrell and articles director Stephanie Wu are both fans of Ace Hotels and their gift shops. Spurrell likes picking up chunky, slightly-hourglass shaped souvenir coffee mugs on her travels, and appreciates the simple monochromatic designs inspired by cities Ace hotels are found in. “The Palm Springs one makes me ache for Southern California right now—I miss being able to hop in my car in L.A. and just drive to the desert,” she says. Wu is eyeing the ‘City Mouse’ pint glasses, as well as this exclusive Pendleton blanket that will brighten up any room.

Mimi Cheng's
“During normal times, I visit Mimi Cheng's once a month to try their latest special with my friend Sam. Their dumplings are the best, and they've been helping the community throughout the pandemic, donating meals to frontline workers in New York. Naturally, I love their sweatshirt, and $10 of each purchase goes to ROAR NY's relief fund for hospitality workers.” —Madison Flager, commerce editor

Night + Market
“I had New Year's Eve dinner at Night+Market 's West Hollywood location and it is truly one of my best memories of 2020. (Yes, I'm counting December 31, 2019, as 2020—it needs all the help it can get.) With an incredible wine selection and truly delicious Thai food, it's an all time favorite dinner spot, and somewhere I send all my friends when they visit L.A. Pick up their cookbook from Bookshop.org or your local bookstore, check their site for larb-pun tees, or pick up this killer shirt from Merch 4 Relief. Ninety five percent of the profits from Merch 4 Relief goes directly to the restaurant, and the other five percent goes to the artist who designed the shirt. Since all of the artists are current or former restaurant workers, it's a worthy cause.” —Meredith Carey, associate editor

Austin Motel
The Austin Motel is another favorite among Traveler editors—last year, the Women Who Travel team was in Austin with hotelier Liz Lambert, who owns several properties in the city, and stopped in to the gift shop. Spurrell calls it “leagues beyond any hotel gift shop I've been in,” while Carey says it is her favorite hotel gift shop in the world. Shop gems from the rooms—like the colorful robe Spurrell has her eyes on, as well as gorgeous candles, ceramics, chic bathing suits, technicolor Recreation Center mugs, striped swimwear, pool floaties, and gel pens. The sturdy "Y'all Means All" canvas tote, designed by Austin artist Will Bryant, is one of Carey's all-time favorite buys. “It speaks to the ethos of the hotel, and the spirit of Austin. And of course, it's ultra-colorful.” One hundred percent of the profits from the tote and the Austin Motel tees go toward the Bunkhouse Employee Relief Fund.

Fish Cheeks
“Fish Cheeks is one of my favorite restaurants in the city, and they make adorable shirts with mottos like "Spice, Spice, Baby" and "Cheeky." They also recently collaborated with a new global pantry company, Omsom, to create a spice pack that lets you recreate their larb at home. The first batch sold out in three days, but it's available again for pre-order.” —S.W.

Hotel San Jose
“It's no surprise that Hotel San Jose has a great gift shop, too. (It's owned by the same folks as the Austin Motel—and its merch profits go toward the same relief fund.) I'm partial to this Topo Chico top, which celebrates what is surely tied for first place with the margarita for national drink of Texas. If you want something a little more toned down, check out this cactus tote. You always need more totes.” —M.C.

21C
“21C is one of my absolute favorite hotel brands. If you've ever stayed, you'll know about their iconic four-foot-tall colored penguins, which are scattered around the hotel for guests to stumble upon. They're great for selfies and late-night photoshoots, and each hotel has its own color. This set would make an incredible souvenir.” —S.W.

Surfrider, Malibu
“I have found myself dreaming of salty air and fresh ocean breezes while living out these months in lockdown; precisely what draws people to this upscale beachhouse-style boutique hotel in Malibu, run by a husband and wife team. For all of us still waiting till we can get back out there, the beautifully curated gift shop sells California scented candles and surf books to recreate some of the atmosphere at home.” —Erin Florio, travel news director

Willa Jean
“When you go to New Orleans , there are so many things you must eat and drink, but allow me to add one more: biscuits from Willa Jean (and their griddled banana bread, really). In the meantime, rep the restaurant's ‘In Biscuits We Trust’ T-shirt.” —M.F.

Firmdale Hotels
“Kit Kemp is the founder and design visionary behind UK—based Firmdale, a punchy hotel brand that can convince even the most die hard minimalists of the powers of patterns, colors and layering. Doing brunch in the dining room at their Crosby Street hotel in New York's Soho is like eating in the salon of Kit's own holiday home in Barbados—even with grey skies in Manhattan, the swirls of pinks and blues and yellows warm up the room as would a bright Caribbean sun. Naturally, all items, down to the hand painted porcelain, are Kit-designed and most available for home purchase. I have a few of the teacups in my own home but am hoping to get some of these cushions to warm up my dark blue sofa.” —E.F.

Fortina Pizza
“You don't need a baseball hat with an Italian hand gesture on it, but it certainly has more character than most other caps hanging in your closet. For more convincing, scroll through Fortina's Instagram feed and prepare to get very hungry. —M.F.

Helen's Wines
“Helen's Wines—the first place that introduced me to orange wine. Attached to Jon and Vinny's in Los Angeles (which has its own merch), the approachable selection of vino at Helen's made me feel confident in my wine picks. Thanks to a super knowledgeable staff who know when to push your taste buds out of their comfort zone, a curated selection of bottles, and some stellar branding, it's a must-visit in L.A., even if you're not staying for dinner, which you should because the spicy fusilli is insane.” —M.C.

Phoenicia Diner
“I'm pretty late to the game on this hipster hotspot in the Catskills , but when I did finally make the drive earlier this year, Phoenicia Diner absolutely lived up to the hype. They've got an Instagram-ready interior, an Airstream food out back, and some pretty spectacular home fries. After my breakfast I tried to buy one of their popular classic diner mugs only to discover they had sold out for the day. The good news is they sell their merch online, so you bet I snagged a mug and threw in a cute magnet for my fridge.” —Sarah Ratner, associate social media manager

Langham Hotels
“I have a thing for good pens and stationery, and it's fitting that Langham, such a well-mannered hotel brand, has this gorgeous signature pen. The weight is perfect and heavy enough for a consistent scrawl, and I use it all day—a pretty reminder of all the good experiences I've had at a Langham .” —Corina Quinn, director, city guides

Butter & Scotch
“I cannot wait to take the subway to Crown Heights to visit Butter & Scotch. The Brooklyn bar and bakery makes s'mores pie, a dessert I would eat every day of the week if I could, and raises money for organizations like Planned Parenthood through drinks with names like “A League Of Our Own” and “Smash the Patriarchy.” The feminist bar is selling cocktail kits for those in the New York area; their shirts and cookbooks, though, can be shipped nationwide.” —M.F.

Roberta’s
“If you've done a deep dive of New York pizza, you've surely come across Roberta's. If you've tasted it, you know it is among the best the city has to offer...a big claim, I know. Naturally, their merch is gold, too, especially this Slice of Hell T-shirt, their version of the Mystic Pizza uniform.” —M.F.

Issimo
Marie-Louise Scio launched Issimo earlier this month, right as we began to accept this may not be the summer we sunbathe on the Tuscan coast. In other words, just in time. Inspired by her Il Pellicano retreat 90 minutes outside of Rome, the creative site includes resort wear from top Italian designers like La Double J and Missoni, as well as site-specific collaborations between Il Pellicano and Milan-based textile guru Lisa Corti, so you can at least set your table like their white-suited staff at the resort would have had you spent July there. The collection is achingly chic. It's pricey, but with long-haul travel on hold, maybe this is the splurge you can justify this season. —E.F.

Katz’s Deli
“Katz's Deli is about as iconic New York as it gets. Until you can order a pastrami on rye for yourself again, show your love for Katz's by bringing one of their tote bags with you on your next trip to the park or walk around the block. Katz is helping facilitate food donations to frontline workers, too—you can donate to Feed NYC from Katz's website, or make a matzoh ball soup donation.” —M.F.

PV Donuts
“I've never been to PV Donuts, but I've heard about them for years from a friend who went to school in Rhode Island. She tells me PV is a true local business—small, family owned, and run by people who went to school in the area and have a real pride in the city. The creative, tasty donuts are a major selling point, too (they even have vegan options). Until I can try them, I'm happy to rep their “Send Donuts” shirt.” —M.F.

Sqirl
“I've been craving the ricotta and jam toast from Sqirl in Los Angeles for months. While I've already asked my friends who live in Los Angeles to start bringing me these jams when they visit, in the meantime, I may just have to sign up for their jam of the month club or buy myself a gift set.” —S.W.

“Also recommended by a friend, this Lexington coffee shop has all the usual merch: T-shirts, bulk bags of beans, coffee mugs, beanies, etc., but they also sell tabs to open for family and friends in the area, and pay it forward breakfast taco or pastry bundles and drinks. Buy one online and they'll add it to the store's pay it forward board for anyone to redeem.” —M.F.
