STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A starter pistol accidentally discharged during a robbery at the front desk of the Hilton Garden Inn in Bloomfield Monday morning, sparking a large NYPD response, police said.
At about 6:30 a.m., two male suspects entered the building, located at 1100 South Ave., and walked behind the front desk, an NYPD spokesman said.
One of the men pointed what police described as a starter pistol at a female worker, demanding money from the register, according to police.
The woman handed over an envelope with an undisclosed amount of cash.
At some point during the ordeal, the pistol accidentally discharged inside the lobby, police said.
No injuries were reported.
The suspects, who fled northbound on Glen Street, are described as white males, both standing about 5-feet, 5-inches tall. Witnesses told police they were shielding their faces with camouflage neck gaiters.
“We are cooperating with the NYPD on their open investigation and cannot comment further at this time,” said Kristine Garlisi, chief of staff for the Nicotra Group.
Several marked and unmarked police vehicles were spotted outside the hotel Monday morning as officers with the 121st Precinct canvased the surrounding area.

That figure is actually down 43% from the same time last year.
Twelve robberies have been reported in the 121st Precinct, according to the data.
