Free agent wide receiver T.Y. Hilton will command top-end money when he decides on where he'll play next season and the reigning AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs are kicking the tires on the possibility, according to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler. Hilton has spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and chances are unlikely he re-signs with the AFC South franchise.
That's where the Chiefs come in, who already have arguably the NFL's top tight end in Travis Kelce and speedster Tyreek Hill to pair with Patrick Mahomes.
"They’re low-key looking around at some of the top guys available," Fowler said Sunday on SportsCenter. "They made an offer to Juju Smith-Schuster before he re-signed with Pittsburgh. I’m told they looked at everyone from AJ Green to Corey Davis to Curtis Samuel. All of those guys are now off the board. Maybe the next is TY Hilton. He’s one of the best players available at that position, but the Indianapolis Colts are trying to re-sign him. Maybe two AFC playoff teams can battle it out for Hilt.
"I expect receiver help. Maybe they re-sign Sammy Watkins or the Chiefs are looking at potentially left tackle help. Alejandro Villaneuava, Russell Okung, two longtime NFL veterans still out there and available. Or they might try to plug that position in the draft in late April."
According to Spotrac, Hilton's market value hovers around $10 million per season. Hilton recorded 56 catches for 762 yards and five touchdowns last season and has recorded five 1,000-yard seasons during his career as one of the league's most dependable options on the outside.
The Chiefs appear to be big-money spenders in free agency this year with former Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Melvin Ingram expected to visit with the franchise this week. Like Hilton, Ingram would be a proven — yet expensive — veteran player who would fill an immediate need in the starting lineup opposite of Frank Clark. Ingram isn't expected to be the only free agent pass rusher Kansas City could go after.
The Chiefs have had to make numerous changes this offseason due to salary cap issues. When one fan tried to blame those issues on Mahomes’ massive contract, a former Chiefs offensive lineman came to his defense. In a now deleted tweet, one fan tried to pin Kansas City’s salary cap woes on their star quarterback.
Former Chiefs offensive lineman Mitch Schwartz, who was recently released by the team, immediately stood up for Mahomes. Schwartz pointed out that the pandemic has affected the salary cap, and that has hurt Kansas City quite a bit.
“This is absurd,” Schwartz tweeted. “Look at Pat’s deal compared to any other QB, he set it up to take way less money the first few years than all the rest. We kept everyone we wanted and made the Super Bowl. The pandemic dropped the cap by $25-30 million from the projected amount, blame that not Pat.”
