A new hospitality offering has opened at Illinois’ most popular tourist attraction, Navy Pier. Officially dubbed Sable at Navy Pier, the long awaited development further bolsters downtown Chicago’s hotel options. While many across the country are struggling with pandemic fatigue, the new hotel, which features 223 guest rooms, could become another major draw to the already popular lakefront attraction.
Designed by Chicago’s Jackie Koo, whose other hospitality work includes theWit hotel in the Loop, Hotel EMC2 on the Magnificent Mile, and the Inn at Lincoln Park, the new hotel, which stretches across a long span of the pier, is described as a “horizontal high-rise” by the architect. Certified LEED Silver level by the U.S. Green Building Council, the new hotel also claims to feature the world’s largest rooftop bar, Offshore.
The “Sable” moniker is a reference to Navy Pier’s service during World War II, where it was the temporary home to the USS Sable training ship.
The hotel was developed by Maverick Hotels and Restaurants and is affiliated with Hilton’s Curio Collection flag of boutique hotels. James McHugh Construction Co. acted as the general contractor for the development.
While the rest of Navy Pier is still closed due to safety concerns, as more of the population becomes vaccinated and local and state-level officials ease restrictions on leisure activities, both tourists and Chicago residents will eventually discover a newly transformed attraction.
