A Bay Area Fairmont hotel's abrupt bankruptcy filing left guests scrambling to find accommodations — including one professional sports team.
On Friday, the downtown San Jose Fairmont shuttered after a Chapter 11 filing. Guests were told they had to leave, although the Fairmont did pay for their new rooms at nearby hotels.
The Vegas Golden Knights, in town for a two-game series against the Sharks, had just wrapped up their pregame meal when they were informed by hotel staff they needed to pack up and depart. The team did find a new hotel, where they stayed Friday night.
"I think that’s a first for probably everybody on our team," defenseman Nick Holden told the Associated Press.
In a press release, hotel representative Sam Singer said the Fairmont expects to reopen in 60 to 90 days after finding a new "management partner."
“We know that by taking this difficult step we will come back a more vibrant hotel to the benefit of everyone in San Jose, including the vitality of the City’s downtown, nearby businesses, and Silicon Valley conventions in a post-COVID-19 world,” Singer said.
The San Jose Fairmont's website does not mention the closure, but searching for bookings shows no availability. The site also boasts of a recent "$10 million dollar transformation of the lobby."
The 20-story luxury hotel opened in downtown San Jose in the late 1980s. It has over 800 guests rooms and suites, plus a rooftop pool.
